They were cooked in a variety of recipes by Native Americans, including by the Apache, Bella Coola, Gitxsan, Gosiute, Makah, Ojibwa, Quileute, Skokomish, Yurok peoples. -- The fruits are popular with birds, who also distribute the seeds. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
